Design is fundamentally a creative process leading to a product, or a product concept, with good functional, aesthetical and ethical qualities. Interaction design is design with digital materials. During the first year, the students gain a broad perspective on the subject working in themes like gaming, mobile technology, spatial and physical interaction, mass media and digital media. Within each theme, current research is combined with ideas, problems and needs from IT and media industry. Creative idea generation and concept development are combined with methods for evaluating the use qualities of concepts for interaction. In the second year, the main focus is the thesis project; an individual specialization aiming to reach the state-of-the-art in research in an area chosen by the student. The project is planned and carried out by the student under supervision, covering practical design work as well as theoretical reflections on design. The studies are supported by courses in design theory.

The interaction designer is responsible for the use experience delivered by a digital product. It could be a web application, a mobile game, a work-oriented software application or an interactive TV channel. Employers typically include companies in the IT and media industry, organizations for cultural production or research institutions. Interaction designers in the IT industry often work in close collaboration with business developers, product designers, technical staff or programmers.
