The course was established 2004-03-11. This document is the reconstruction of a syllabus approved 2004-03-11 by Utbildningsnämnden vid Konst, kultur och kommunikation. The syllabus is valid from 2004-03-11.

The reconstruction has a new layout although the text is unchanged. Some notions migth have been substituted by recent equivalences.

Entry requirements

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should have a basic knowledge of and an insight in the journalistic working process, in particular regarding aspects of journalism in digital media.

Assessments

Students must complete all assignments and be active participants in seminars.

Course content

The course gives a general introduction to news journalism and reporting, with an emphasis on the journalistic work process in digital media. The student will apply the journalist’s method with insights in developing ideas, doing research, treating sources in a critical manner, interviewing, and presenting news in various genres and media. Alternative methods, e.g. from design, will be applied to demonstrate the possibilities of communication design with regard to graphics, information structure and user-orientation. The student will produce a number of news stories during editorial workshops and publish them in a web magazine.

The student will get an opportunity to study journalistic storytelling out of different perspectives, such as with the help of hypertext or digital photo. Technical constraints and innovative opportunities within digital publishing will be introduced by case studies. The student will integrate and demonstrate his knowledge by planning and producing a final project.

Learning activities

Studies will be carried out as individual and group assignments, workshops and lectures. Students will be assessed by the instructor and other students.

Grading system

Fail (U) or Pass (G).
